The Future Leaders Programme is an initiative run by Active Schools East Lothian aimed at developing leadership skills in young people from Primary through Secondary and beyond. Its purpose is to build a pathway into leadership, coaching, volunteering, and community involvement through sport and physical activity.
Core Aims
- Teach transferable leadership skills such as planning, communication, organisation, and decision‑making.
- Enable young leaders to support delivery of sport and physical activity for younger pupils.
- Build a foundational pathway into coaching, volunteering, and further leadership roles
How it Works?
Young people work with their Active Schools Coordinator and School Staff, who act as a mentors and help them shape their leadership journey. The programme is flexible and can be adapted to each participant’s goals. Typical steps include:
- Identifying interest and suitable leadership roles.
- Meeting with a coordinator to set aims and placement opportunities.
- Supporting coaches or activity leaders in clubs, classes, and events.
- Ongoing reflection, evaluation, and progression toward future opportunities in education, volunteering, or employment
