Pinkie Cleugh beyond Musselburgh: the reaction to the battle

Friday 9 September

7:30 – 9:30 pm

Evening lecture with Dr Amy Blakemore, University of St Andrews

On 10 September 1547, the Scottish royal army was heavily defeated by an English invading force in the fields between Inveresk and Wallyford: as many as 10,000 Scots were massacred in the rout that followed.  The English invasion was intended to bring about the betrothal of the 4-year-old Mary, Queen of Scots to the boy king Edward VI.  It failed in this purpose -- a decade later, Mary married Francis, the heir to the throne of France.  Dr Amy Blakemore's lecture will consider the response to these dramatic events in the courts of Britain and Europe.  This event is provided by Musselburgh Conservation Society.

Free, but visitors will be asked to make a voluntary contribution to Musselburgh Conservation Society.
