East Lothian Archaeology & Heritage Fortnight 2025

Hidden History in the Hidden Toun – the intrigue and enlightenment of the 1700s! – 2025

Wednesday 3 September

10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Haddington is an historic market town which has more than made its mark on Scotland’s history and we can prove it!  This year we will take another deep dive into the John Gray Centre archives to reveal aspects of the intriguing and enlightened 1700s. Spoiler alert: we have documents, artefacts and maps to show you which are very rarely seen and have been curated just for one day. We will also take a peek inside the archive room!

Please join Lorna Colvin-MacLean from Haddington’s History Society and Ruth Fyfe, Archivist at the John Gray Centre as we discuss and look ever so closely at the documents we’ve unearthed from deep in the archives.

After delving into the hidden archives, we’ll take a walk around Haddington to look at some examples of its Georgian buildings and mansions and as an extra special treat we will have access to Haddington’s Townhouse.

This tour will appeal to new and life-long residents of Haddington who are interested in Haddington’s amazing history and architecture.

Cost: £10 (All funds raised will go to Haddington’s History Society)
