East Lothian Archaeology & Heritage Fortnight 2025

St Mary’s Inside and Out – 600 years and still standing! 2025 – 2pm

Friday 12 September

2:00 – 4:00 pm

Haddington is an historic market town which has more than made its mark on Scotland’s history. St Mary’s Church, in size and stature, stands as an authentic example of resilience, fortitude and reinvention. It has borne witness to many dramatic episodes in the history of Scotland. Over 600 years it has survived destruction and undermining, partitioning and redesigning, and was reroofed and restored to its cathedral proportions once more – just over 50 years ago.

St Mary’s already offers a self-guided tour to visitors with volunteers available for more information and a friendly welcome. But there’s always more to show and tell visitors from near and far about this most amazing and historic jewel we have hidden in plain sight.

Haddington’s History Society (HHS) in collaboration with St Mary’s (SM) and Lost Haddington (LH) invite you to discover more about St Mary’s history and its important role in Scotland’s history.

Inside St Mary’s:

Lorna Colvin-Maclean (HHS) will provide an historic overview of St Mary’s, John Hamilton (LH) and John Weireter (SM) host an exhibition of rare and interesting photographs and artefacts, Wendy Lund (SM) interprets St Mary’s Stained Glass windows, Alexandra Maffei (HHS) presents the features and history of the Lauderdale Aisle and Marie Macpherson will be on hand to discuss the intrigue and impact of the Siege of Haddington.

Outside St Mary’s:

In small groups we will tour the outside of the Church looking at its architecture and amazing features.

This tour will appeal to new and life-long residents of Haddington who’d like to learn more about the history and architecture of St Mary’s Church - 600 years and still standing!!

Cost: £10 (Funds raised will go to St Mary’s Church & Haddington’s History Society)
