This course is for all that work in Early Learning and Childcare in East Lothian.

Outcomes:

• To explore the development of numeracy in the early years
• To understand the Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning (SEAL), particularly for the emergent child, and how this relates to the East Lothian framework
• To share practical ideas of how to develop this approach in your setting
• To examine the role of the adult in supporting children’s conceptual development, in play and real experiences

Course Outline:

1. Introduction to SEAL, ELC Frameworks, pedagogy and the role of the practitioner

2. Understanding numbers and numerals: developing number word sequences and knowledge of numerals

3. Developing the perceptual counter: number structure, combining and partitioning and finger patterns

4. Developing the perceptual counter: spatial patterns, subitizing and temporal patterns

5. Multiplication and Division: grouping and sharing

6. Developing your numeracy rich environment and displays

• You will be sent six numeracy academy chapters to read throughout the programme

• You need to attend all the google meets: 04/10/22, 01/11/22, 22/11/22, 17/01/23, 07/02/23, 07/03/23 4.45pm - 5.45pm

• You will be asked to be reflective throughout the process by keeping a journal, completing tasks and sharing your developments at the google meets
